About Me
Involved in Research and development of cannabinoids and terpenes at Steep Hill Labs, and Front Range Biosciences for 7 years. I have studied terpene profiles of named strains for 4+ years and continue to study them and their effects and mechanisms in humans and in deterrence of insect herbivores that attack the plant. At Front Range Biosciences we know why aphids, mites and armyworm dont like your strain for lunch or dinner based on the terpene profile. There is a lot of refereed literature regarding the physiological science as to why different terpenes are energetic or sedative, anti anxiety or anti despressant, muscle relaxing(but not sedative) or good pain relief. Much of this knowledge is from reading hundreds of reviewed research papers in essential oils. Scientists reported in these studies on many plants and their terpenes. Simply put cannabis terpenes are present in many other plants and they have been studied for hundreds of years around the world. There is no need to guess with speculative terpene effects from non peer reviewed internet sources. The strain name will, all to frequently, not guarantee the same profile and effects due to differing phenotypes of these crosses that frequently are present in the seed. You dont always get what you think you are getting because sometimes it IS quite different. Only terpene profiles are consistent in matching terpene entourage effects between two samples, strain names are iffy and can dissapoint. Some named strains with a "new name" are already present in the public offerings as existing strain names, so you can get the same entourage effect with a different strain name. We measured a 43 terpene panel set on about two thousand accessions. Seed data do vary enough to even reverse entourage effects in some cases(energetic can be sedative with the same name). My view is that the names are brands, but until seeds have the oil profile consistency of clones, the cannabis grown from a pack of seeds cannot be relied upon for the same effects without verfication of the terpene profile. SO when you look of the effects of a strain you can be misled. The only way to solve the consistency and accuracy of effects issue is by clones of a known, measured terpene profile, tetraploid genetics, or having the measured terpene profile. There is much more work to do but we are already way ahead of the 60% sativa, 40% indica type sillyness. My future goal is to contribute to a system that allows the consumer to select the entourage you have liked in the past, or know that the dispensary doesnt have what the customer wants. With more work we can entirely describe entourage effects that arise from combinations of terpenes. Sometimes terpenes are agonists(defeat each others effects). Sometime one terpene overrides the another one with conflicting activity and sometime they can combine synergistically for effects that exceed what is expected of the combination or the the sum of the effects.see less
